      ... recently in 1950 but never catastrophically. We walked for one kilometre up to the crater, on black volcanic sand and pumice, to the high point of 127 metres but it felt more than that in the mid-day sun. There are smoking fumaroles smelling of bad eggs and some fascinating rock formations and extrusions. The whole trip was very enjoyable despite the heat and humidity.       ... its a 15 min walk but it's along the freeway that does not have a walkway, so we decided to catch the bus in. We were told a 3min ride, they were right, 3min later, the bus driver was telling us end of line get off this cost is 1.80euro pp. anyway nice to be in town, it was so pretty all the white buildings and so many people, after the serenity of Kamari.       ... every few meters. Max met his new Dutch mate in the street so we had to stop and chat awhile.
      The queue for the cable car back down had the kids thinking they should catch the donkey, no way I was decending 580 sun baked, manure filled steps to the bottom so we baked in the queue for awhile, clever greeks sell that Ice cold beer at almost every store that the queue passed by :)

      ... the pier in Fira where we boarded a tender back to the ship.You can also walk down but after climbing the volcano we decided to take the cable car. There are more that 770 steps down the path and you share it with donkeys who transport people up and down. Some fellow travellers who walked found the experience painful due to the steep incline but also the angry donkeys who apparently bit one traveller in the leg.
