... The depth dropped away and just kept dropping. We slowed right down to crawl over the bar, terrified of running aground, while our depth gauge told us we had 0.0 metres below our keel. We were going so slowly that it took us about ten minutes to cross the shallow bar, and I'm fairly sure that we touched the bottom several times as the swell pushed us forwards.

Eventually, though, the depth below us crept up again and we breathed a huge sigh ...

... as there was a very small space for us to fit into and a strong current pushing us through the marina. Nonetheless, we made it alongside and set out to see some of the town, which is apparently rather lovely.

The strangest thing we saw there were the pictures of cute dogs pasted onto the white walls! Many examples of the typical Portuguese tiles, both old and new.

Our next stop was at the Milreu Roman ruins (4th century) ...

... to have them take us on three half-day tours to see the local sights; they would pick us up at 830 AM each morning.

Last night we found out that the hotel serves breakfast at 9 AM, but we managed to steal a cup of coffee and a piece of bread before meeting Margarida and Robrecht, our guides. In their forties, she an architect and he an historian, they had recently relocated from the Netherlands to the Algarve and decided ...
