After we got back down, we explored much more of the city, wandering around the various squares and walking over to the Beguinage, a complex of buildings and a church with a very peaceful inner courtyard that served for hundreds of years as the living quarters and prayer-space of an order of nuns - and still does. ... set around a tree-filled green square of grass. This is an old convent, built in the 13th century. Further up the canal, we bumped into a couple of churches, right opposite to each other.
