    The other Pompeii

A travel blog entry by sarahgapyear on Sep 11, 2013

... some of the most out of place roman ruins ever. Herculaneum had the same fate as Pompeii but was covered in lava (I think) rather than dust so is much much better preserved. 5.50 euro entry, hooray for being 21 and from the EU, so many entrance fees are reduced. You walk in over a bridge which gives you a view of the whole complex, it is significantly smaller than pompeii, and then you can walk down to their old street level and go inside the ruined houses and ...

... of discovering Naples for the first time. Train never got above 20kph and was dirty. Hopped off after 2 stations. Wham what a culture shock. Map provided by hotel only had major street names so not a great help in a city full of narrow streets. Bought a better map and walked. Soon came across the Duomo which ...

We found a public beach and Manda went swimming in the Mediterranean the rest of us paddled as the water was freezing. We came back to Naples on ...

... boat we stop at the green grotto and look at the brilliant green of the water. There are people swimming through the grotto and paddling through it, but the water is so clear and the green is brilliant.
The boat picks up speed now and we cruise around the west side of the isle to the blue grotto. Today, I'm going in to have a look at it. Wow! the whole experience is very, very cool! Waiting in line on the water as all the boats bob ...

... guitars, teddy bears and tissues, Naples is just a dirty, disgusting place and we recommend to bypass it. Anyway, it didn't take long to get to Pompeii and once there we caught up with Mum and D again. A little bit about Pompeii... The ruins were cool and it was amazing to see that parts of buildings were still standing after so long but we were hoping to see some of the bodies that were preserved by the ash. These were no longer at the sight unfortunately. It was ...
