... it was jammed. When we got on the boat, we thought there would be a huge line up for the cafeteria and the buffet. But when we got to the buffet, there was still eleven or twelve tables left, we got a window seat. During the meal we kept hearing announcements for people in the cafeteria to keep their lunches short. We were glad we were in the buffet. After we got off the boat we took a Pacific Coach Lines bus to the airport and ...
San Isidro, Costa Rica travellerdalton... and into Panama with a stamp for the vehicle in Dom's passport but because the computer says differently we cannot cross. Oh my! Eventually they will figure it out. Apparently no one on duty can over ride the computer so we have to wait for the boss who cannot be reached and it is Saturday, so who knows when. It is a good thing that we are self sufficient and are prepared to wait in comfort. As it turns out the boss can not be ...
Canoas, Costa Rica ddgfraser... in Costa Rica, take out our bags and show them to customs there and that was it. Total time 3 1/2 hours, including an hour at the border. Staying at a really nice little place in Palmar Norte (which is a tiny little town, that is quite like Palmerston North - I'm sure the similarity in names isn't just a coincidence). The name of the hostel is Brunka Lodge and it has a swimming pool and TV with ...
Palmar Norte, Costa Rica varney... there is a premium put on 'more', 'better', 'faster' and such and that those less fortunate are seemingly left behind or tokenly cared for and about. Here, the community truly treats the handicapped as part of the whole and everyone supports them and tries to mainstream them as just another member of their community that needs the support of the community...and everyone seems more than willing to ...
San Carlos, Costa Rica splunk... she would help us organize the people to help make it happen. The idea was to place rain gutters on the biggest clean roof in the area, the school,. They would drain into two 2500 liter tanks and the water could be drawn out by a hand pump. We wanted to connect them to the plumbing that town has, but it was going to be too complicated. (Yes, the town has plumbing to each of their houses, but the evil marina owner doesn't want to ...
Puntarenas, Costa Rica wmdkim... The girls had set up a ride back, but the guys still wanted to hang out in town so we split up. After grabbing some food and drinks we decided to try our hands at the casino again. I had far better luck that night and ended up making up all of my losses and turning a healthy profit for the week. After cashing out we packed seven guys into a land cruiser-which was pretty uncomfortable-and two hours later we were back at the ship going to sleep. We woke up on our last ...
Puntarenas, Costa Rica ericgardner... to Manual Antonio. Quepos, Manual Antonio and Playa Dominical, Costa Rica maiamuffin... everyone else here is staying from 3 weeks to 3 months or more. This weekend most of the group I started with is going to the beaches on the Pacific Ocean and are leaving on Friday after our work is done. That being the case, Chuck and I are being driven to San Jose airport where we are each renting cars and going our separate ways. Chuck is a real special friend who I'm sure I'll keep in touch with. He's a young 63 and like me, sold his ...
San Carlos, Costa Rica splunkHi again, So we went on a canopy tour of a cloud forest early this morning. Andrew and Brett went on the zip lines (and a tarzan rope) high above the tree tops while Darcy, Morgan and I walked the suspension bridges through the canopy. It was raining as we set out (as it is known to do 80% of the time in a cloud forest). As we walked though it began to clear ...
Monteverde, Costa Rica jandaSo today was a great day! We started out early and walked to a butterfly garden (accompanied by 3-4 stray dogs). We got a full tour of butterflies from all of the different ecosystems here in Costa Rica. (Lots of Blue Morphos!!) The guide was a graduate of a zoology program in the states. She also showed us a lot of insects including tarantulas, flying cockroaches and the hercules beetle that can lift 5lbs making it the strongest animal in the world (what it can lift compared to its ...
