the YHA Hostel Sunday night, and return to wellington Monday
afternoonish and be back by 3 so I could babysit.)
OR
B) I will wake up early and take the bus to Picton, and then the ferry
to Wellington.
OR
C) wake up early, take the bus to Picton, go to the aquarium, maybe take
a scenic dinner cruise if I still have money. Enjoy staying at the
privately owned and operated YHA hostel in Picton. I would then take the
ferry back on saturday at noon.

... I could have done with a little more research though as the first appoint of the day was on the Terrace – a long elegant street that lives up to its name sitting 50-80ft above the waterfront below. The little research I should have done was to work out where on the terrace I needed to be as this would have meant that I would have avoided the lung-busting walking up numerous flights of stairs, only to walk most of the way back down again!

At any rate, we got it done. So now today we are free to follow other pursuits, and the plan is simple. Steve will fulfill his desire to rip the skin off his fingers while climbing a rock face, and Ange and I will trek up a local mountain to get a better view of the surrounding area.

... to avoid the rain & walk up through the forested mountain bike track. The panoramic view overlooking the city is spectacular. The city is radially surrounded by hills on one side & the Kapiti coastline on the other. The Wellington Fault runs right through the city itself. Hundreds of houses sit on the hills availing of the view. As per usual we took a slight detour on the path back to the city & ended up close to the airport...spot the tourists ...

... didn't bother with any of the whale or dolphin stuff there. Instead I just took the time to detox and catch up on lots of sleep. This was the last stop in the south Island. We got the 3 hour ferry across the sea from the south island to the north and arrived in Wellington late in the day. It became quite obvious that we were now well and truly crossing the Tasman Sea, renowned for being one of the roughest seas in the world and we could have four days of this to look forward to! ... we cruise on towards the North Island. We take a drive along the harbour and up Mt Victoria this afternoon for a 360-degree view of Wellington and surrounds (pf it was so much fog we couldnt se one meter). Later visit Te Papa, NZ's national museum.
