... not mean that the rest of family is any less dear, but I think most Americans have some concept of "circles" of family- we even have a word for it-- "immediate" family vs "extended" family. Not just "family". Perhaps this comes from an immigrant nation of people who have left their extended family behind? Perhaps this is part of what allows our culture to take more risks, because we do not have much family honor to protect?
