... It made me wonder if face masks could be a status symbol. I know people wear them if they feel unwell or presumably as protection, but does the quality of the mask indicate how much you can afford to spend on a mask? So many people wear them, although more in Tokyo than here. And of course I wonder about the research behind the practise. Surely they only form an effective barrier for a short period, about 30 minutes for even the really good ones?

... plenty of squatting is required. You would then fill the bucket and wash yourself with the shampoo and soap provided. Once clean you were allowed to climb into the tub and relax, before rinsing yourself once more upon leaving. You may ask how I know this.
