... a special mushroom planting drill bit. The mushroom spores are on wooden plugs, which we hammered into the holes. We watched our host go on a rampage with his backhoe to find trees for us to inoculate, knocking down what would amount to a small forest. The 1500 mushroom plugs we planted will be available to eat in two years!

... fun. And drinking continued until 4:30am when half of us decided to go home. We stayed up chatting until the rest of them got home at 7am and then went to bed until 10am. So Saturday was spent recovering and taking a lovely walk to Omiya Park to see the shrine, the very depressing zoo (I almost cried seeing the lonely hyena in his concrete cage) and then off for soba noodles for dinner. ... which was cool. Not quite Chiaki, but one of the conductors was 17 which is still amazing. Did I mention that there was a kotatsu at my host mothers sisters house ;D. (Jelly?)
The town that this was in was only about 60km away or something but its all through populated areas so it took aaages. The road there had one touge like section but there was traffic...

After visiting the shrine and chrysanthemum festival, we drove up to "Craft Hills Kasama". There’s a beautiful park with amazing sculptures. We especially enjoy the “Forest of Magician Clay” with life-sized fanciful sculptures to engage kids of all ages. We didn’t go through the Ibaraki Ceramic Arts Museum this time (except for the gift shop), but I highly recommend it. They have some beautiful ...
