... the Imperial Capital in Kyoto and with the Shogun’s capital in Edo (which is now Tokyo). Many of Japan’s present-day highways and railways follow these ancient routes. This hiking trail was a section of the original road that still exists. Although it has been restored and maintained, many of the large rocks that "paved" the road had been in place since it was built around 1630. Most of the path was flanked with green cedar trees, but bursts of fall ...

This morning we head off to Hakone, about 80 min train ride away from Tokyo, to stay in a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan). Hakone is located in Japan's Fuji National Park known for hot spring resorts and Mt Fuji views. At least we are told there are good views of Mt Fuji, not that it ever made an appearance for us. We shared some hot sake (which I am beginning to LOVE) and some cold sake (do not like as much), and they helped me order some better food. We hung out for a while but eventually I left (had to make curfew). I enjoyed a nice soak in the Onsen at the top of my hostel ...

... guests seem to be here to enjoy the onsen facilities, you only have to site in the foyer - 90% are roaming around in yukatas (cottons dressing gown). The surrounding gardens are beautiful with 2 waterfalls and a small shrine. Cam and Omi had a soak in the hot tub and Celie is amused because when you open the toilet door the toilet lid automatically puts itself up and makes a sound like 'hi'. We area about to go to dinner, not sure what to expect but we're very excited. Until ...
