Tsumago day 17; Travelling along the old merchants
... beer is) doet me denken dat er mogelijk wel eens beren zouden kunnen rondlopen. Een kort gesprekje in een tussenstop onderweg waar ik (hoe kan het anders) thee en wat zoetigheden aangeboden krijg leert me dat er in de ochtend zelfs nog enkele spottingen geweest zijn. Ikzelf heb minder geluk en desondanks dat ik iedere bel genegeerd heb, heb ik niet het geluk mogen hebben een beer tegen te komen. Wel gezien; enkele slangen, hagedissen, vreemde insecten.

... toegangspoort, het bulletin-bord van het shogunaat,... Een kleine tussenstop onderweg om toch even de benen te strekken lijkt me dus wel op zijn plaats.
Erg lang kan ik wel niet blijven want om 6 uur wordt het avondmaal in de minshuku reeds opgediend. Na een tempel te bezoeken en wat doorheen de straatjes te lopen snel ik dus maar terug richting het station om mijn reis naar Tsumago verder te zetten.

Top 10 of Nakatsugawa
1. The 20km walk along the Nakasendo, the old path that runs from Tokyo to Kyoto. The walk took us through the cobbled streets flanked with wooden houses of the towns Magome and Tsumago.
2. Hitching was incredibly easy, we onlt did it twice but both times were picked up within 5 minutes... that beats 5 hours wait in Argentina last year.

... uphill, we decided to slow down and see where we ended up at half time and just enjoy the walk, rather than tanking it along and not seeing anything. Nice walking through the bamboo woodland with the sun shining. Met a mini-Hachi (japanese Akita) along the way, who was also out enjoying the sun.
Then a bit of excitement - a bell attached to a pole that says you need to ring it to scare off any bears that might be on the trail! Gave it ...
