Castle sweetness

... t America have this? As we exited the castle grounds, we noticed that the samurai guys were back. But they were headed back into the castle. Double drats! But it was an awesome day otherwise.

Back in Tokyo, we were feeling hungry and decided to partake in something that you probably can only do in Japan: eat in a dessert buffet! Nikko, my roommate on atkins, would never do this. So take that Nikko! Haha! I love desserts (I ...

... estruendo...

... some money on cab fare. Hopefully I can remember to ride on the left side of the street and the other vehicles remember to do the same. I'm also hoping that the rumors of English-speaking guides are true.

Adjusting my expectations... I had thought I'd zip through the castle and get to Kyoto early. Probably not. Everything takes longer than you think.

    english ...big in japan...

... br>lol...but i have also a lot of experiences in the other way...here examples...

hitchhiking...quite easy, even as japanese never do it...funny thing is they invite you to food or give you money...almost always... i refuse always three times, and then i take what they want to get rid of...funny behavior, theoretically it schould be possible to earn money that way.

Otherwise japan is nice, very clean, not as ultramodern as you might think, also it seems that ...

    We heart monkeys :)

... There we spent the night in a ryoken- a traditional guest house with tatimi mats that you sleep on. The place was very old and our room was enveloped by cool paper sliding doors. The hostess poured us some green tea before she left and gave us kimonos to wear around the place. For dinner we went out and found ourselves in a Hawaiian restaurant- bit odd I know! Then we went back and slept on the floor.

'The Wave' and a distinct lack of money!

... If you dont already know, Hokosai painted the many scenes of mount fuji including the famous Wave picture you will all have seen. So it was quite a busy little place, with quite a few tour buses around. After checking in to the hostel we walked down the road to the museum and were inundated with free samples of various japanese foods, some nice some so very not. The exhibition was great, we were both very impressed by his work which included beautiful landscapes, scenes on ...

Snow Monkeys and winter hillside treks

... from 9-5pm and we naturally got there too late.

I love bullet trains in Japan. We got from Nagano back to Tokyo in the space of an hour and a half and summing up enough energy we found our ludicrously small hostel with a kitchen meant for 40 guests consisting of two hobs and a hot plate and crawled into bed exhausted!

There aren't enough schools, and the existing ones are often in terrible disrepair. Illiteracy is rampant. Many children don't even finish elementary school, and only a small fraction ever make it to junior high school. That's where PEPY Ride (http://www.pepyride.org) comes in ...

    Day Trip to Nagano

We took the Shinkansen to Nagano using our rail pass and after arriving found out which bus to catch out to M-Wave, the ice skating rink used in the winter Olympics. We had never been ice skating so were willing to give it a try.

Took an old wooden floored bus out to M-Wave and walked past a sign in Japanese then paid for our ticket to the ...
