Don't look the monkey in the eye!
... seemed to be the only tourists not heading to the temple. I knew the monkey park was up a hill as it offers amazing views over Kyoto but I didn’t realise quite how much of a hill. 160 meters above sea level to be precise, but 30 minutes of switchbacks and steps through jungle paths led us there. As we reached the summit I began to wonder if this was such a good idea. All the way up there are signs telling you not to look the monkeys in the eye. That seems easy ...

... is vast, and the main gate is very impressive and imposing....and one of our favorite films ever filmed there (lost in translation)...also parts of Last Samurai were shot there. On the grounds are the ruins of an old aquaduct, and many lanterns and maple trees. The odd ones were even starting to turn to their red autumn colours! We walked about the gardens for a while, but were so tired after about 7km of walking in 36c heat we decided train, hotel and showers were in order ...
Exploring Kyoto
... applied for a permit, which we did not have and so we could not go in there either. Overall we were a bit disappointed by it. Instead of wasting more time we walked straight out the other side of the grounds and across the bridge into Northern Higashiyama. Our destination was Ginkanku-ji which was said to be one of Kyoto’s premier sights.

The voyage was scheduled to take two days, so our arrival into Shanghai would be just before noon on Sunday morning.
