Wonderful - can't recommend it enough! A review of Fihalhohi Tourist Resort
We booked through Eclipse (First Choice) on a budget option for Fihalhohi Island Resort for 7 days (10 would have been better). I was a bit nervous and not sure what to expect from what they rated as a 3 star hotel but it was brilliant! It looks exactly as the website and photo's show and better which is a refreshing change!
We arrived by a 50min boat transfer from Male Airport and were greeted with coconut drinks and hot towels before checking-in into our Comfort option rooms. We were offered an upgrade to the water bungalows at $90 extra per night but we decided to stick with the Comfort room. The rooms are clean and well appointed with a turn down each night and a fridge which came in handy for bottled water. I guess the only reason why it is not rated higher is because there is no TV or tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms but when you are in place as beautifiul as that who needs it!
We were seated at the same table at their restaurant throughout and got to know our waiter Maahir who was always willing to share info about the island and was attentive throughout our stay. It is recommended to tip your waiter $10 for the week and the housekeeping staff $10 so make an allowance for that in your budget.
The two bars - Fishermans bar and the Blue Lagoon (my favorite) were both lovely and we spent most nights enjoying the glorious sunsets and trying out the cocktails (there is a service charge on drinks and food served outside of the main restaurant so be aware of that). The food is good especially the curries which were delicious. I guess it could get a bit repetitive if you stay longer than the seven days but you can go for meals (not inculded on fullboard) at the Blue Lagoon bar and in the evenings they set tables on the beach itself for dinner by candlelight if you book in advance - very romantic.
We booked a snorkelling excursion but unfortunately it rained that day so we had to abandon that idea but even with the rain it was hot and still beautiful with plenty of rainbows. Just by swimming a few yards out from the beach or looking off the diving pier you will see loads of tropical fish anyway. We saw squid, baby reef sharks, parrot fish, rays and angel fish just to name a few.
I had a head massage at their Ayvedic center which was lovely and it was not just a head massage. By the time I was finished I was covered from head to toe in fragrant oils and quite relaxed so I would recommend going for a treatment there. It is a spiritual experience.
I can't say enough how absoultely beautiful the island was (15min walk around the whole island) and the hotel is unobtrusive on its surroundings also you hardly notice that there are other people staying there.
There is little "night-life" or evening entertainment so if you are looking for something other than complete peace and relaxtion this isn't the place for you.
The only minimal downside is having to queue in the visa/passport area when you arrive at Male airport after a 10 hour flight and then having to queue again for the First Choice counter once you get out of the airport to meet your rep for details on your transfer and info on the resort but this happens with most holidays. Also whilst waiting for your boat you are guided to a resuarant to sit at which is a bit pricey. Those are the only down sides I can think of!
It was a perfect holiday and I can't wait to go back!
