Winter Wonderland near Winthrop A review of Sun Mountain Lodge
Aaaahh, Sun Mountain Lodge......have read about it for years and finally winter 2002-3 hubb and I and our 2 daughters, at that time 9 and 6, did a winter escape looking for snowfun, family time (hoping for some romance time too!) and xctry skiing. WOW did we find all of the above and more. So we went back this winter same time between Christmas-New Year's. For families -yes the Mt. Gardner rooms are great--roomy with a private balcony or patio (psst-if you get a ground level room the kids can walk right out and play in the snow in front of the room), minifridge, gas fireplace. They have wonderful children's programs during the holidays including a very fun New Year's Eve kids party in the evening so hubb and I actually DID get some romance time.
The xctry skiing is great but it did take some trial and error to find out where the hills were and make it fun for the 6 yr old that first visit. We all loved sitting in either outdoor hot tub surrounded by snow and absolutely fabulous mountain views. Great family or romantic getaway, plan on at LEAST 3 nights stay in winter to make it worth the long drive from the west side of the mountains. The North Cascade Highway is closed in winter so you have to take the "long way around" thru Wenatchee and along the Columbia, pretty drive tho!
