What a gem of a hotel A review of Royal Sonesta Hotel Houston

Stayed at the InterContinental Oct 8 - 19, 2004. We hosted an awards banquet with over 250 guests and even though there was a larger event going on with 700 guests, the staff made us feel very pampered and saw to our every need.

The rooms are fabulous and very beautiful with muted tones and leather chairs. A very large armoire shelved the TV, a mini bar, a fridge and several drawers. The bed was large and comfy with six pillows and crisp sheets. The turn down service laid out my robe (and spa slippers) every night and filled the ice bucket. The bathroom could be larger but had wonderful amenities, a great marble vanity with lighted makeup mirror, a shower/bath with excellent pressure and hot water, and a full size hair dryer. The hotel was quiet and there was no hallway noise. The carpets looked very fresh and everything was clean. I didn't particularly care for the smell of the cleaner they chose (too botanical) and it was very evident in the bath and elevator, but I wouldn't deduct points for that since I came in contact with it very little.

The cafe was very quiet and the waiter said that they are just about to redo it, although the food was quite good on our two visits. The bar had a pianist in the evenings and sports on the two TVs. I did see someone smoking a cigar in the bar, which is an open area of the lobby, so that was disturbing. Shopping options looked great. The hotel is just a few blocks from the Galleria, but the traffic in the area is pretty bad, so allow for extra time if you're trying to make an appointment. It is almost the same distance from both Hobby and Bush airports - approx $40 cab ride in traffic ($55 if you come in during rush hour). Parking was $7 per day. We received the phenomenal rate of $99/nt. I would have expected $179 or up. Did not visit the pool or gym, but I believe both were free for guests. Loved this hotel and would highly recommend it.
