Unlimited Potential under a Sagging Complex A review of Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort
We didn't have high expectations when booking our stay at the Shawnee Resort. The resort was as we expected. The surroundings are beautiful. The building and area has so much history. It has the potential to be the mountain version of Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego or the Greenbrier in Virginia. Yet, sadly, they have let this place run down and it's no more than a 1-2 star "resort" in the Poconos. The rooms were average to below average. They were comparable to an old Fairfield Inn or Holiday Inn Express. The room was very clean. We took golf lessons. The first day we took a Short Game lesson. It exceeded our expectations (which were not very high, mind you). The facilities are wonderful for Short Game. There is an approach course on which you can practice chip shots for hours. The second day we took a Full Swing lesson, which was very disappointing. The video camera was broken (we were not told this upon arrival or before the lesson started). Something about the lesson reminded me of the range in the movie Tin Cup. The course itself was in good shape. The greens are really challenging. Overall, we enjoyed the golf course. The food at the resort is SO bad (I think it's called Charlies). Don't eat there, period. One of the best things about the place was Sam Sneads. It's a tavern/restaurant located at the entrance. It is wonderful for great atmosphere, live music, and good food.
