Triumph of style over service ? A review of Merchant's House Hotel
This boutique style hotel has recently opened only minutes walk from the town square of old Tallinn. Clearly a great deal of thought and money has gone into redeveloping the historic building. Our 'suite' consisted of a large sitting area with a flat-screen TV; an adjacent sleeping area on a different level complete with wood-beamed ceiling, fantastic king-size bed and another (smaller) flat-screen TV; and a small wet-room style shower room. Unfortunately our stay was marred by poor housekeeping standards. On arrival the shower-room floor had clearly not been thoroughly cleaned. On returning to the room at 16:30 after our first night the room had still not been serviced. We complained to reception about this and the state of the shower-room floor. The room was subsequently serviced but the shower-room floor still remained rather dirty.
Buffet style breakfasts were reasonable but we didn't try the evening meals in the restaurant. There is also a cafe, and a bar offering a wide range of cocktails.
In summary the hotel offers reasonable value for money if you can put up with potentially erratic service standards.
