The White Elephant is no White Elephant! A review of White Elephant
The White Elephant was a welcome surprise based on my past experiences staying on Nantucket. The hotel is ideally located, a few minutes walk from town and Jetties beach, waterfront with a great view of the lighthouse and the Harbor. Although I was there off season, there are wonderful places to walk and relax on the water.
A complementary van meets all ferries so we sent our luggage along and opted to stroll over to the hotel at our leisure. Our room was upgraded (we paid $200 per night and I know the suite was priced at $275 as I had declined to book it.) We had a fully renovated suite with a terrace overlooking the ocean, a gas fireplace and large sitting room. Because they asked when I made the reservation, a bottle of champagne and box of chocolates met us in the room for my friend's birthday, again complementary. The room was luxurious, with elegant nantucket style.
The service was fine. They offered to drive us to our dinner reservation, arranged a tour of the island for my friend the following day, and also recommended restaurants. There is a continental breakfast included and plentiful copies of the Globe and NYTimes in the library.
After staying in many charming but decrepit places on the island, the White Elephant is an optimal mix of charm and modernity. I would highly recommend it off season, not sure if I would pay $600 plus anywhere in the summer. If you ever have a chance to see Nantucket lit up for Christmas, take it!
