The perfect romantic and idyllic hideaway A review of Hotel Egmond

My girlfriend just visited me for the third time while I'm stationed in Paris for the year. Having seemingly seen every nook and cranny of one of the world's most romantic cities I decided to show her another side of European romance. I had been to Bruggge one time before with a bunch of buddies on what was basically a Belgian Oktoberfest. Though that trip was tremendous in its own right I remembered between my last pint of Duvel and my next pint of Leffe that Brugge was a strikingly romantic city. What with the real Venice flooding this time of year, the choice was easy. Off to the Venice of the North we went. Naturally a sejour at a Sofitel just wouldn't fit the whole romance format so I did my research and took my chance on Hotel Egmond. It turned out I made the perfect choice. Despite a reservation mix-up, we were given (thanks Chris) a clean and very spacious yet cozy room on the second floor overlooking the garden. The hotel itself is located almost too perfectly next to Minnewater, the town's swan filled Lake of Love. The inlcuded breakfast is basic but does the job well. The parking was conveniently free and driving there was fairly simple as the hotel is located just intra muros. WORD OF WARNING: never ever drive in Brugge unless you're familiar with the roads. It's a one-way street bordel that'll have you circling around forever. The walk to the market and Burg squares is a breezy ten minutes max so unless it's hailing or pouring rain outside a car isn't even necessary.

I highly reccomend all three restaurant's we ate dinner at while there, Guillaume's (haute cuisine with at a very good value), De Karmaliet (haute cuisine with a not-so-good value) and Tom's Diner (a very warm, friendly, affordable and romantic restaurant with very decent food).

All in all I am very please with my experience both in Brugge but especially at Hotel Egmond. From the staff to the room to the extras I couldn't imagine a better place to stay with a loved one in Brugge.
