The best place on the island! A review of Barefoot Cay
My wife and I just returned from our honeymoon at Barefoot Cay. We were there for a week and had beautiful weather and were able to get out and really find our way around the island (first time to Roatan for both of us) and I must say, without a doubt, that Barefoot Cay is one of, if not THE, best place on the island.
Santos, the general manager, is wonderful: he took us fishing, showed us around the island, let us "rent" his car to explore. He is your one-stop shop for anything you need on the island: information on & booking for bonefishing trips, places to buy fresh local seafood, directions anywhere, etc, etc...
Milesse and John, the owners, are absolutely wonderful to be around and are tremendous hosts. They have really done a lot of great work to that little island and have designed everything with pure, simple luxury in mind: the architecture and planning in the bungalows is amazing; the grounds are beautiful and clean; the pool; the decks...I could go on and on.
Barefoot is located on the south side of the island and has a great view of mainland Honduras. It's beautiful to see on a clear day and there is a constant, refreshing breeze blowing from that direction through the bungalows and across the entire Cay as well. While this breeze is one of the Cay's best features, it also has a quasi-dark side: there is a fair bit of trash in that floats in from the mainland in the wind. While you can see litter floating in the water anywhere on the south side of Roatan, I was so glad and very impressed that at Barefoot Cay, they have a whole crew to clean and rake their beaches at dawn every morning to remove and debris that gets past the reef. The litter is an island wide problem, but they really do a great job managing it on the Cay.
We can't wait to get back down there!
