Thank You Sylvia Beach A review of Sylvia Beach Hotel
The only hotel in which I've ever actually spent the day lying in bed, the Sylvia Beach is very special. Not the Embassy Suites or a Radisson fast-fix, the hotel is old, odd, and not particularly pretty. It's like staying at your grandmother's house. There are people to whom I would not recommend this hotel, but then I probably wouldn't want them over to my house for the weekend either.
On Sunday morning, when my husband and I looked out our window and saw, "Thank you Sylvia Beach" written in the sand, we knew were weren't the only ones. This is a hotel I often miss. This is a place to go to feel comfortable and well. This is the place I always want to run to.
The Sylvia Beach is not slick in any way, and the quarters are a little close. You are a guest there--not a travelling diplomat or a high-roller. The experience is emotional and perhaps spiritual--but not rarefied.
Go there with good intentions and respect for the real thing and you'll find yourself going back sooner than you thought.
