Stayed in 'The Cottage' at Glen Oaks Motel A review of Glen Oaks Big Sur

Spent 2 nights (August 2 and 3) in "The Cottage" of the Glen Oaks Motel. Aside from the slight smell of propane gas from the unvented kitchen (staff found a fan for us), we really enjoyed our private little spot at the Cottage. It's up the hill a little bit from the main part of the motel (which looks quite nice) and is more private than Archie's, if you're debating what cottage to try. This was certainly the biggest space we stayed in during our San Francisco/Carmel/Big Sur trip, and, interestingly, had the nicest furniture! Lovely old bureau in the bedroom. There's a little deck outside, a fireplace, large bathroom, nice living room, kitchen with table and chairs, and a nice-sized bedroom. Other travelers who wrote in the visitor's journal seemed to have the time of their lives there! Be sure to walk down the trail into the woods and look at the creek and little waterfalls. Beautiful. And a great value for the area, which is $$.

Had a mixed sort of meal at the Big Sur Roadhouse right across the road, which other reviewers have mentioned. My husband had a really delicious steak, and I had the salmon tacos, which were oddly bland - white rice and black beans out of the can with no seasoning. Pretty good prices for the area, though, and my salad was delicious! We had great meals everywhere in California. Bring extra money for Big Sur, though - we weren't expecting $16 hamburgers everywhere. Try breakfast at Deetjen's!

It was a little disconcerting to have only one ATM available for 30 miles around (which is what a local said), but it worked the day I needed it so I can't complain.
