Stay Somewhere Else A review of Renaissance Asheville Hotel
Not at all what I expected. My wife's work put on a conference here and I decided to tag along and check out Asheville. It's too bad they picked this hotel (although I don't know what the other options are in the downtown area). When we checked in they stuck is in a "mountain view" room -- this, apparently, means incredibly small corner room. To make matters worse, the minute we walked in the room we were overpowered by the strong smell of deodorizer. Needless to say, we asked to be moved. They moved us down the hall (barely out of range of the scent) into a decent sized room. Better, but the rooms are not at all what I expected from a Renaissance. I've stayed at better appointed La Quinta Inn & Suites.
Since it was raining we decided to check out the hotel restaurant... but it was not to be. We stood and waited for a hostess to seat us for a few minutes before we even caught a glimpse of the first employee. I would've assumed they were closed had it not been for the people sitting and eating. She asked us how many... "two for non-smoking, please"... "OK, but it'll probalby be about 30 minutes because we just sat a party of 17." Nice. I should mention that there were two conferences being held there this weekend, but any good facilities manager would have the place better equipped to handle a capicity crowd. She said we could eat at the bar. It's important to note that the "bar" is nothing special AT ALL. It's a small alcove just in front of the check-in area... nothing about it makes you want to hang out there -- definitely not a place where you'd want to eat a meal there.
More crappy things... the lighting in the rooms is pitiful -- 4 flourescent lamps with 1 standard light fixture outside of the closet.
Had to call tech support to get the in-room internet to work.
Views are beat from all the rooms I've visited. Crappy parking lots, rusty roof areas, etc. Had hoped for a view of the downtown area.
Air conditioning is no better than the cheap Myrtle Beach motels I stayed in in high school. It's controlled by a wall thermostat, but is actually a noisy window unit. Crap.
All the staff people we dealt with were pretty cool, but theres little they could do to make this place better.
Bathrooms are clean, but really small. You can't close the door without doing some maneuvering. Tub/shower did not pass the pube test.
The conference was apparently smooth, but the staff tried to give one of the rooms to a larger group -- despite having a detailed conference contract with our group. And they switch a room on us without notifying anyone -- not a major inconvenience, but schedules with locations had already been printed.
Needless to say, we won't be coming back.
