Spruce Point Inn is like time-travelling back to your childhood! A review of Spruce Point Inn Resort and Spa

I travelled to the Spruce Point Inn this past July 4th long weekend for the wedding of one of my best friends. I had never been to Maine before, but I was excited because the pictures on the Inn's website promised a true New England experience. In no way was I disappointed.

The Spruce Point Inn has several different accommodations: Suites with king-sized beds, fireplaces, and spa baths with separate showers that could easily accommodate two or three people; rustic cabins that will remind you of summers spent at the family "Camp"; and quaint Main Inn rooms that make up for in charm what they lack in contemporary amenities. There really is something for everyone and every budget.

The setting overlooking Southport Island and the Linnekin Bay is exactly what I hoped Maine would be like. I arrived early in the evening, and the Inn and its' surroundings were enveloped in fog. The only noise to be heard was a fog horn. In the morning, I opened the curtains to see blue skies, even deeper blue waters, and shingled cottages across the bay. The Inn has two pools, and I found myself preferring the un-heated saltwater pool perched on the edge of the water. There was nothing bare-bones about the pool, with padded teak loungers and fresh towels restocked long before the supply ran out. While there are no waiters taking drink orders poolside, "sunscreen concierges", or any of the other novel distractions many have come to expect from summer resorts, the Spruce Point experience is one free of stress and totally peaceful. Just what I needed when I wasn't helping with pre-wedding details.

The Spruce Point Inn may not have every modern convenience, and if you are looking for a "Soho-House-by-the-Sea" you won't find it here. What you will find is a welcoming and warm reception in a setting that will make you feel as if you travelled back in time to one of your favorite childhood vacations, a commodity rarely found in contemporary luxury hotels.
