Ritz delivers over Memorial Day A review of The Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay
We had another fabulous stay at the Ritz in Half Moon Bay over Memorial Day weekend. The weather cooperated, as it was a gorgeous sunny weekend at the coast. These made the gorgeous scenery surrounding the Ritz seem psychedelic - with florescent green grass, brilliant blue sea and sparkly white surf.
Check in was smooth. The gatehouse radios in your last name to a greeter who appears knows your name as you walk up. The greeter escorts you to the front desk.
This was our second stay and we were celebrating my birthday so they upgraded us to an ocean view patio room. This was extra nice since we were staying on American Express points (45K per night) this trip and usually point's stays get the lesser rooms.
Our ocean view patio room was on the 4th floor out at the end of the hotel. From these rooms (odd numbers above 455) You look right out of bed over the rugged coastline. You have a small patio with two chairs and a table outside. Because they on the beach side of the hotel you can go right out the sliding door to 100 yards down to the beach. There was a big lawn right outside for my 4yo son to play on. We had never stayed on that side of the hotel before, but really liked it better than our last room.
The spa was amazing as usual (ask for Stephan as your masseuse). Don't miss out on a romantic meeting with your partner in the central spa room (bathing suit required) where there is a fireplace and hot tub.
We had my son checked into Ritz Kids Saturday evening while my wife and I had another great dinner at Navio. Superb tasting menu. Ideal seating time is 1 hour before sunset. After dinner there is a jazz trio by the bar.
We also used the pool (which is a ½ mile walk down the road). We put on the nice robes and walked down to the outdoor hot tub in the morning (also amazing but you can't see the ocean from inside). My son and I flew a kite on the lawn. We hiked back and forth to the beach a few times.
The service is first rate. This Ritz is one of the nicest hotels for a weekend stay in the world. Its expensive as hell but worth it. Go for a discount rate ($395 a night) for a deluxe room and pray for an upgrade (otherwise its $500 a night for an ocean view). But even if that doesn't work out you will have a great stay.
