Reasonable accomodation in reasonable area A review of Hotel MdR-A DoubleTree By Hilton Hotel

Stayed at the Marina del Rey Courtyard for the last two nights of a recent vacation (mid-Jan 2005).

Location:

Not really in what you could call a 'tourist' part of town although reasonably well located in a busy (and safe) shopping area - there are several restaurants, cafes and bars in the vicinity as are two movie theatres. Couple of large supermarkets also on site and ATM around the corner.

Good option if you are on business or just travelling and don't want to stay at an airport hotel although probably just a little too far off the beaten track for those anxious to party or see the sights.

Fairly close to LAX it's a $10 cab fare/10 minute journey to both Venice Beach and Santa Monica. Similar fare/drive time to the airport. Cabs always available at front entrance if needed. Free car parking otherwise.

Room:

Hotel room itself quite large (we were given a second floor room with pool view and small balcony) and comfortable - although the room was a little dark during the day (as we were in a shaded part of the building and the room had only a very small patio door). But this shouldn't be any real inconvenience as you'll be topping up the tan, shopping or out exploring the greater LA area anyway!

There was some aircraft and traffic noise but really nothing to prevent a decent night's sleep (and only obvious when the patio door opened).

The furniture and decor was well maintained and the room was very clean.

Reception:

Front desk staff helpful and friendly. Cookies available at front desk when we checked in about 5pm.

Facilities:

Breakfast buffet extra cost - I think about $9/10 a head. Internet access available in lobby - but at extra charge.

Attractive pool area with plenty of loungers which we only really got the use of after we checked out and before heading off to the airport!

Bar and small gym also on site.

Other info:

Didn't get a chance to see much of the Marina area - just not within comfortable walking distance. However, an afternoon and evening in Santa Monica was great and the food at the Italian restaurant at 3rd and SM Boulevard very enjoyable.

Probably would give a 3 1/2 star rating to this property moreso because of the location but would certainly have no problems staying there again.
