Pricey but nice A review of L'Auberge Del Mar

We just had a one-night getaway from our 3 kids (all under age 4) and stayed at L'Auberge as a splurge - Feb '04. It was pricey, even with the negotiating my husband did since it was last minute as they weren't full but we appreciated the extras. We stayed in one of the 8 suites - for a suite it was small but it had a balcony and fireplace and was very clean. The grounds were kept up nice and very pretty. The service was great - they called you by name and were very forthcoming with offering ideas of where to go and what to do. My husband had also worked with Conceirge to arrange for a gift basket to be waiting for me in the room! The location is great with all the restaurants close by in walking distance - we made 3 reservations that night, including at the hotel ! It was hard to decide! We enjoyed Sbicca across the street. The beach is in short walking distance with paths to follow or just stroll on the beach. It is close to the railroad tracks but we only heard the train once or twice late at night or early morning while awake - it didn't wake us up - and we left our balcony door open with the fire lit so we could hear the waves. We had one run-in with room service - we called and ordered dessert rather than eating at the restaurant. After an hour, we called down and they said they had misplaced the order so it was never made. We just cancelled but probably would have been compensated had we made a stink about it. My husband and I each had a specialty spa treatment and loved the experience. Quarters are a little cramped but the services were nice. We'd visit again, for a special occasion.
