Pretty good hotel A review of Charlotte Marriott SouthPark
Travelling from England and never having visited this area before, I booked this hotel in advance through Expedia for two nights on my arrival and one night just prior to departure on the recommendations of Trip Advisor. Unlike the last reviewer, I was not disappointed in the slightest. It perfectly fitted the bill for me: quiet, pleasant and good value.
My first impression was certainly favourable but, of course, hotels the world over generally look the same. Adequate free parking, a trickling fountain and attentive check-in staff all added to this, and I was pleased to see that the visiting NFL team had chosen the same quarters for their brief stay in town although held some reservations regarding possible noise. They took the entire top floor and I never heard a peep from them. In fact, the hotel facilities were pretty much deserted even though the parking lot was almost full; the bar area is well sized, the bar staff were very friendly, the seating areas are quite plush and the pool/gym area I found to be more than adequate.
There's an outdoor pool open until 10pm, accompanied by two sizeable jacuzzis (the indoor one was quite hot). While there is an outdoor bar, I doubt it is ever used but you're right next door to the main lounge in any case. There are no extensive gardens, but you'll find a patio at the rear of the property which backs onto some small shops and a hairdresser and, of course, the upmarket mall is just across the street.
The rooms, while nothing fancy, were more than satisfactory although the beds seemed a little hard for my taste. Hygiene was fine, even on top of the TV cabinet/wardrobe and the cleaning staff were full of smiles and pleasantries on our encounters.
Finally, I have to make comment on the breakfast. As buffets go, this was impressive and very good value at $10 each. While the Brits might not be used to crisp bacon, flat sausages and "grits," everything was tasty and I walked out absolutely stuffed.
I would probably recommend this hotel, although I have stayed in better. For me, the solitude and peace were just what I needed.
