Pleasant surprise - great room and staff! A review of Travelodge Redding
As was mentioned by another review, I was also a bit apprehensive about staying at a Travelodge, and I had read on other sites the location (N. Market Street) is a questionable area of Redding. Well, I was pleasantly surprised.
The hotel appears to have been renovated not too long ago, as our room was very clean and had a fresh appearance -- it was also very large. We stayed in the 'sleepy bear' room, which includes 2 queens and a separate room with a double-bed (intended for a child, but comfortable enough for adults), all for $77. The area of town is fairly quiet and seemed just fine -- its about 10 mins from the busier side of town (Hilltop Drive).
The manager, Steve, was very helpful. We had requested a crib (they provide one no charge), which is normally available on a first-come first-served basis. Upon arrival, we were informed the cribs they had were already taken, but Steve was taking care of this. About 20 mins later, he shows up at our door with a brand-new crib for us to use!
As for the breakfast, there are pros and cons. You are given a voucher to use at the diner next door, which is very quaint and traditional. PROS: you essentially get a cooked-to-order breakfast, based on the amount of the voucher (about $3.50 per person). Our breakfast was very good, and beat a continental b-fast by far. CONS: you may have to wait if you come during the morning rush (the diner is fairly small). If your in a hurry and have a smaller family than we do, there is the option of sitting at the counter. You will need to pay for any extras above the voucher amount -- for our large family (I have 4 kids between 3-12), it came to about $10 including the tip. For me, it was worth it.
Overall, this was a very nice experience. We're hoping when we stop again we can try the outside pool (too chilly to try swimming this time).
PS - Make sure to stop by and walk the Sundial Bridge during your visit to Redding -- its free and my kids loved it. Very nice to see at night (when lit) as well as the during the day.
