Perfectly adequate A review of Royal Hotel

We left it to the last minute to book a hotel in Bath and everywhere was fully booked. So it was with some trepidation when we found that this hotel still had rooms for a Saturday night. We needn't have worried as it was fine. The hotel is directly opposite the train station so it is ideal for anyone with lots of heavy luggage or someone who is planning on doing lots of trips out of town. Bath is not a huge town so it is only a short walk from the hotel to the sights.

The room was a reasonable size, nicely decorated and clean. The bathroom was large too. There was plenty of room for a bath but there was only a shower. The room was very hot and every single floorboard creaked. The wardrobe was too small for a double room too. However, on the plus side, there was a trouser press, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, TV and radio/alarm clock. There were also a sewing kit and a shoe shine sponge so a big plus on the freebies side. Our room was at the back of the hotel and noise was not a problem (or wouldn't have been if the room had not been so hot that we had to have the window open!).

The breakfast was a big disappointment. As a vegetarian, the only cooked option I had was eggs on toast cooked in various ways with baked beans. Annoying as the full English breakfast included mushrooms, hash browns and tomatoes but none of these items could be added to the eggs on toast or substituted for the beans! My gripe was made worse by only having one slice of toast on which to put my scrambled eggs! Breakfast should not be a problem if you are a meat eater though and to be fair there were cereals, fruit, yoghurts, croissants and toast available to help fill you up.

Other facilities - a restaurant, a guest only bar and a sports bar are all on site. There is a lift but it only carries 2 people.

To sum up, this hotel is perfectly OK and if the price had been a bit lower (it cost £180 for Saturday and Sunday) I would have had no complaints.
