Overall, a great experience... A review of Hotel Monaco Salt Lake City - a Kimpton Hotel

I decided to extend my business trip and had my wife join me on Fri evening. When we checked in, the Hotel was very impressive. From the courteos valets to the whimsically designed lobby.

The first, and only real problem we had with the hotel was that there was a $15.50 per day charge to park our car at the hotel. This was an unwelcome surprise.

Once we arrived at our room (A mediterranean suite) on the second floor, we found the room to be delightfully designed with ample, if not roomy space. The one disappointment though, was the bath area and the view. It was somewhat small with a plain tub. No jetted tub or oversized tub here. The problem with the view was that we were directly over the valet entrance to the hotel, so we saw the top of a dirty white awning just outside our window (room 205). Looking past that, we had a great view of the capital theatre.

Having stayed in a similar hotel in Nashville (Hermitage Hotel), I can say that the design of the Monaco was more appealing, however, the service at the Hermitage was much better. At the Hermitage, the doormen and bellhops all knew our name and greeted us personally every chance they had. There was none of this at the Monaco. And because of this, the conceirge and front desk staff comes off a bit stuffy. But the valets seem much nicer, even though they never called us by name - they had all that information if they wanted to greet us.

All in all, we had a first class experience. It would have been nearly perfect if the conceirge and front desk staff were replaced by the Hermitage staff. Don't expect to get personalized service and you won't be disappointed.

On a sad note, our guppy died on the second day it was sent to our room. So make sure the cleaning staff feeds yours or it will put a damper on your day.
