Outstanding weekend, despite a few hiccups. A review of Omni Bedford Springs Resort

We spent last weekend at Bedford Springs to celebrate a friend's 50th birthday. It was only the second weekend the resort was open, so we expected a few hiccups. First, we booked the weekend through the resort's website. The website really does not to the place justice. There is a lack of photos and explanations which I hope management will correct soon. We arrived on Friday afternoon, a bit early. But, our rooms were ready. The rooms are beautiful - extremely comfortable beds, tastefully decorated. Our bathroom was huge and one of the nicest I have seen. Actually, the entire resort looks like it stepped out of the pages of a Restoration Hardware catalogue. We traveled with our children, so after exploring the resort, we headed for the outdoor pool. It can be a far walk if your room is on the other side of the hotel, so bring flip-flops to wear, although there are nice and clean locker facilities at the outdoor pool should you want to change there. The outdoor pool was beautiful, nice lounge chairs and even cabanas to get out of the sun. No complaints there -- they even cooked lunch poolside on Saturday which was a big hit with the kids.

Speaking of food, I would say they still need a bit of work here. The service was extremely slow (especially in the 1789 Room, where we had a three hour dinner -- not so fun). Menu choices are limited and expensive. There is no "children's menu" but the chef provided what ever the kids asked for. I couldn't tell whether the slow food service was a kitch problem or a wait-staff problem, but hopefully they will get this worked out soon. They did put on an excellent Sunday brunch in the Crystal Room.

The indoor pool looked lovely, although we never made it in. The kids preferred outdoors and the indoor pool is actually right in the middle of the spa area, so I don't think it was very condusive to 8 year olds. Although the trails are not fully open yet, we did undertake a couple of hikes. I'm sure once the trails are pruned properly and laid out better, the hiking and mountain biking (which they promise will be operational soon) will be outstanding. We didn't golf, but the course looked exquisite. There is also a fishing pond nearby.

The adults in our party took full advantage of the beautiful spa. Truly wonderful. The Bedford Baths were fantastic. The locker room facilities were amazing and the services provided were exceptional. I put this spa on par with the Greenbrier and the Homestead. I have not been to Nemecollin, so I can't compare. The spa staff were all knowledgeable and professional.

All in all, a beautiful resort that we hope to return to again and again to celebrate special occassions. It is very expensive however, so bring your wallet.
