On the beach in Ipanema A review of Hotel Praia Ipanema
We stayed in the hotel over thnaksgiving for four days. My wife and I enjoyed our stay and had no complaints.
We requested a lux or mater lux room (not sure which one we got). These rooms have been refurbished and are extremely clean. CD radio, Flat screen TV and DVD player were in the room. Very nice. The room had a balcony and was directly across the street from the beach. You could enjoy the beach either way. WE went to the on Sunday, along with every other person in Rio. The beach directly in front of the hotel was not that crowded. About 200 ft down it was very crowded. We borrowed some beach towels from the hotel but noticed that the towels had the hotel name on them in big letters. Probably not a problem but I didn't want to advertise that we were tourists so we bought a big beach blanket from a vendor for $R 15. The women running the beach tent at this section of the beach were very friendly. We rented an umbrella for about $R 3. We didn't have any problems. Nice section of beach.
Currently the lobby is being refurbished, but you can't really tell as they have put up a wall to conceal the work.
The staff was very friendly and helped with our all our requests. The front desk staff spoke excellent english. Most of the other staff spoke english, very helpful when your portuguese is limited to ordering beer and pizza.
The neighborhood near the hotel is full of restuarants and bars. Although, I never found it to be loud. Moroever, I did not feel unsafe walking about the neighborhood. We did not walk around late at night nor on the beach at night.
As to the breakfast included with the room. It was like most other breakfasts included with any other hotel. The coffee was good, the bacon and sauage was a little salty, I think this saltiness is just the way it is in Brazil. Anyway I liked it salty.
The roof top pool is small, but remember its on the roof. The pool is perfect for dipping into to cool off after a full day of walking around Rio. The bar and deck is good place to meet the other people staying at the hotel. Guests tend to gather there near sunset to watch; you guessed it - the sunset. The deck provides nice views to the west and if you look around the corner you can see the Christo. Plan on having at least one evening at the bar at the roof-top pool.
Overall, this is a nice hotel, great location. I would recommend it for anyway that wants to stay in Ipamena. I would stay here again...
