OK, if you don't arrive late at night A review of Marriott Houston Airport at George Bush Intercontinental

This is standard business Marriott with a handy airport location. I had a business meeting here and, except for late night arrivals, this is this hotel's strongest selling point. There is a convenient underground tram that services all of the airport's terminals, with the Marriott one of its stops, so you can arrive in the midst of a Houston thunderstorm and never have to brave the elements, wait for an outdoor shuttle or shell out for a very short cab ride. The underground tram runs every three minutes in two circular directions, making last minute connections easy, in theory.

Beware late night arrivals, however. I called the hotel during the day to let them know I'd be arriving after 1 AM and was told the tram shut down at 1 AM, but that an airport shuttle bus went from termincal to terminal and stopped at the hotel, leaving every 10 minutes. My flight got in at 2 AM and there was barely a soul in the huge terminal that my flight arrived at. It took some time to find anyone to ask directions.

Directed to the shuttle stop, I waited 20 minutes before a parking lot shuttle driver let me know that the loop shuttle the hotel told me about stopped running at 1 AM and there was no transportation direct to the hotel. I went to the cab station at a different part of the terminal---no cabs! They called for one, but after ten minutes of waiting I set off on foot for the Marriott which was visible in sight, albeit with no direct walk-way to walk on. I'd advise caution if you're arriving late; the hotel could do more to make transit easier and if there is any question on your part, book a room at one of the off-airport hotels that provide 24/7 shuttle service to and from the airport.

The rooms were OK, staff friendly and helpful, and the hotel design was futuristic for the '70s. For those of you over 6'2" tall, watch out for the very low ceilings on the connecting hallways. The casual restaurant is OK, but in a basement location with direct connection to the airport underground tram shuttle one floor down, so don't be surprised to hear trams coming and going, announcements on the tram PA, and other reminders of nearby public transportation when you're eating.

Summary: Great for airport meetings, easy to get to and from the terminals during the day, standard Marriott business hotel, good value for the money. Watch out if you're a late arrival, though.
