OK but needs to address certain issues A review of Courtyard New Haven at Yale
When we made a reservation at this hotel in May 2004, it was called "Holiday Inn at Yale University." When we arrived a month later, we couldn't find a Holiday Inn on Whalley Avenue. Instead, there was a Courtyard by Marriott -- apparently, the hotel had changed name and ownership. Hotels change hands sometimes, but it would have been nice if we had been told in advance so that we had known what to look for, particularly since we made our reservation directly with the hotel, not with a booking service.
Our room was large and clean and the hotel's location within easy walking distance of Yale University was great, but be aware that only 1-2 blocks in the opposite direction, you will find a much less desirable neighborhood with drug deals etc. going down in broad daylight.
To the disappointment of our 12-year-old daughter, the hotel had decided to close its swimming-pool for renovation. Not the smartest thing to do in the middle of the summer season! In the morning, we came down to breakfast late, but before closing time. The buffet table was completely cleaned out with no staff in sight to replenish the serving plates. After sitting at a table for about 10 minutes, listening to the staff chatting and laughing behind the closed kitchen door (not once did anyone bother to check if there were new breakfast guests in need of food), a hotel manager happened to walk by. When told what was going on, she went out to the kitchen to find someone and eventually more breakfast food appeared. Still, this is unacceptable at a well-known hotel, regardless of whether it calls itself Holiday Inn or Courtyard by Marriott.
