Off the Beaten Path A review of Hyatt Regency Coral Gables

Despite one of the strangest experiences I've ever had in a hotel, I would return. Here's what went on. I arrived on a Sunday evening and about nine ordered from room service. When the order arrived I realized that the order taker had not understood my desire for a bottle, not a glass, of white wine. I sent the room service waiter back to get the bottle. I then took the warming cover off my dinner only to discover that it was not at all what I had ordered. I immediately called only to be informed that they didn't have what I wanted so they had sent me something else! I simply couldn't believe it. When the waiter returned, I had him remove their alternate selection (which had only one of the ingredients in my previous order--chicken but that was the only resemblance to my request. ) Unfortunately, there was no way to open the bottle of wine he'd brought, so I had to call them yet again for a corkscrew. A second waiter arrived with the corkscrew and informed me there would be no charge for the wine! The next morning I went down to get a cup of Starbucks and when I told the server what room I was in, she informed me that there would be no charge due to the problem of the night before. While I found the whole incident bizaare to say the least, I thought the hotel did an exemplary job of making up for their mistake. But this hotel did seem to have a very good and pleasant service staff. That being said...

The hotel is really quite luxurious by Hyatt standards. The rooms are large and comfortable. I would ask for one facing the pool as opposed to mine which faced the street. There are some rooms on the lower floors with pleasant balconies overlooking the pool that would be very pleasant. The pool itself is large and adequate -- not exactly lush in the garden department because it is on the fifth floor of the property. There is a bar there and service from a modified room service menu.

Coral Gables is not the most exciting part of Miami. But it is a sea of calm, there is some decent shopping. But if you're looking for nightlife or for that matter, day life, you'd do better in Brickell, Key Biscayne or the Beach itself.
