Obvious improvement A review of Doubletree by Hilton Charlottesville
I have stayed in Hilton hotels for quite some time now. I must say that in the past, I haven't had the best experiences at this one. However, I have stayed at this hotel almost 3/4 of 2005 to this point. There have been tremendous improvements made to the place. As I read the others' reviews, I felt compelled to comment on some of the other users' remarks. First of all, you don't have to drive through the Sam's parking lot to get there, unless of course, you pass the Double Tree entrance. Second, in the times that I have stayed there (now & in the past), I have left my room several times with very expensive valuables (jewelry, laptops, wallet, etc.) in the open. Not once have I ever had anything stolen, even when they cleaned the room while I was gone. That must have been an isolated incident; which could happen in any hotel. Third, their rates have always been competitive, especially for the HIGH level of service I have received there in the recent few months. The bar/lounge on the 9th floor has come a long way since I stayed there last year. There is an older gentleman who works there in the A.M. who has a nice smile every time I visit. They have put a younger gentleman there at night that really seems to have a passion for helping people enjoy their visit and a strong interest in overall quality of the hotel. The housekeepers, though most don't speak too often, always smile or wave. When I come across maintenence men by the indoor pool or in the hall, they always have a great attitude towards their work.
The front desk staff is the only area that may still need a little improvement. However, the two very smiley and helpful foreign women (hispanic?) during the morning are the exception. They are always willing to go out of their way to help me. They have even given me parting gifts upon checking out after long stays. The new manager spoke very inconsiderately to her employee right in front of me (who was being very helpful, nonetheless). She got mad at her for not answering the phone in time, meanwhile there were other guests that needed help, and after the manager took the call she went back in her office. The girl helping me was very professional about it, though I could see that her face got red and her eyes watered a little. The night front desk staff has had "training" name tags since before I stayed there. They really need to be evaluated, because they don't really know what they're doing.
The restaurant and the bar must have a new head manager, because things have really gotten better in this area. Overall I think the hotel is the best value in the area, considering that some of my business associates stay at the Omni, and are not at all pleased with what they experience.
