Not Quite What I Expected A review of The Desmond Albany
I arrived late on a Friday evening in April 2004 to find the entrance to the hotel shrouded by construction baricades/fences. Not a great start. After a long and tiring trip, I was assured that my room would be quiet. Well, it might have been had it not been located at the rear of the hotel, very near the frontage road of the adjacent highway. Not to mention the late night revelers who seemed to enjoy running up and down the hallway (probably why the carpeting is so worn/soiled), talking/laughing near the top of their lungs. So much for quiet.
The room itself was acceptable but not exactly as billed. Like that in the hall and elevator, the carpeting was essentially threadbare. The other finishings and furniture were equally dated. The bath was about the same - the toilet rocked because it was loose from its mountings. The shower was barely operable and had a cheap fiberglass tub and enclosure.
On the positive side, my room was equipped with a high-speed internet connection. I can't think of anything else. I spent three night and, as a previous reviewer noted, the noise level was much more tolerable by Sunday night.
My next trip to Albany will not include a stay at the Desmond. Before this trip, family members recommended the Crowne Plaza and the Marriott. I should have taken their advice.
