Not Great but Value for Money A review of Econo Lodge Newark International Airport

I remember looking at the other messages on here regarding the Econo Lodge before we set of for our holiday and they had me worried. I was however pleasantly surprised. The hotel was very cheap (the cheapest we could find in NJ and NY) and did have many benefits. The rooms were, in my experience clean and tidy, the bathroom was clean and modern as well. The complimentary shuttle runs to schedule 24hrs a day and the daytime driver is very friendly and helpful. The hotel is near to New York City and Newark Liberty International Airport - and so poses another major advantage. The rooms are also heated and air conditioned.

On the downside there were a few problems we encountered!

Firstly, the bathrooms have a problem with power failure which happened twice during our trip (requiring us to move rooms on one occasion). Also, the television set (ours was modern but the TV in the room next to us was from the 1970's!) has a very fuzzy picture meaning you can only watch a couple of channels - we managed ABC7, WB11 and Discovery Health.

Also, many things mentioned on the hotel's website were not actually at the hotel. There was NO internet access, coffee / tea making facilities in the room, hair dryers, alarm clocks, complimentary newspapers, pay for movies, ironing boards or clock radios. The continental breakfast is available from 7-10am and consists of either tea or coffee with a donut!

The area was a bit scary intially but is ok. Despite being near the airport, you can barely hear aircraft or noise from the highway outside. Nearby there is a Subway, McDonalds and Burger King (all within 5min walk) and two petrol (gas) stations. 20 minute walk takes you to the nearest supermarket - the Stop & Shop - which is well stocked and open from 7am till 1am. There is a nightclub next door to the hotel, which didnt really disturb us with the noise of music. However, if travelling back late to the hotel after say 9pm on a Friday / Saturday night, do not walk past it as they are unsociable characters smoking drugs and you feel very shaky!

One word of warning!! The nightime shuttle driver is very dangerous. When he drove us to Newark Airport on our return journey at 5am, he had been asleep and kept falling asleep at the wheel. He went through red lights and swerved across the highway - almost killing us! He made no attempt to help us with our luggage on / off the minibus. Also he REFUSED to drop us off at the airport terminals (which is what they are meant to do). We needed terminal B for British Airways but he dropped us off at P4 for Car Rental, meaning we had to get the Newark Airport Airtrain to Terminal B - adding a lengthy amount of time to our journey.

At the end of the day though, it was very cheap and in my opinion was good value for money!
