Not for Everyone A review of Strater Hotel
This hotel is a quaint, old victorian-era hotel that's located in the heart of old-town Durango. There are some very nice antique decorations and furnishings in the hotel but it lacked a lot of the modern conveniences that I have come to expect in a hotel in this price range (over $100/night). For example, the bathroom was excruciatingly tiny and cramped; the bathroom did not contain a bathtub, only a small shower stall. I really would have liked an old-time claw foot bathtub for romantic evenings. The room did not come with a coffee maker, microwave, refrigerator nor hair dryer. These amenities I generally expect in most rooms nowadays. I asked to have a coffee maker brought up but I was told that they did not allow cooking elements in the rooms. I can understand that since it is an old hotel, but they did not provide coffee pots in the lobby or any kind of hot drinks except during the continental breakfast. However, the coffee was so bad that we had to go out to one of the local coffee joints to get our coffee. That was very disappointing. Also, they did not have any of the nice touches that I have seen in most other Colorado inns or hotels such as fresh-made cookies or desserts sitting out. They had a small sitting area in the lobby but again they did not put out any reading materials, drinks, etc to make it a comfortable place to sit and read. I think the service was okay but not especially friendly. I really expected more from this level of hotel. I would not stay here again.
