Not as good as it sounds A review of Le Meridien Delfina Santa Monica
This hotel sounded good based on reviewing this and other websites. Here's what convinced me to book it:1. Low rate from a travel website ($124/nite) for the Memorial Day weekend 2003. 2. In Santa Monica, near the beach. 3. Free parking (very hard to come by in Santa Monica - other nearby hotels were charging $18+ per night). Make sure you check into this when you book in Santa Monica...or anywhere in LA. 4. Pictures seemed nice (our room was described to have a balcony with a partial ocean view). 5. It was a Sheraton (can't go wrong there, right?)Here's what we found during our stay: 1. The room was on the the 3rd floor directly above the lobby driveway and "no other rooms were available". 2. The "deluxe partial ocean view rooms" all face the city and a main street (Pico Blvd), which is fairly noisy due to constantly passing buses. We had to keep the fan on to drown out the noise (noise level was fine after that). We did see a slight sliver of the ocean, but nothing like what you would expect when you hear the words "ocean view". If you stay here, I suggest requesting a room on an upper floor. 3. The room seemed nice in pictures, but the general feeling or energy of it was not very good. It felt dank, and dirty (it wasn't actually dirty, but I've stayed in plenty of hotels that feel alive and clean and airy...this wasn't). It was a basic hotel room, nothing special. 3. The hotel is located across the street from a high school on a fairly busy street. So, if you want cute, quaint, and quiet in a cafe and flower shop neighborhood, I would suggest looking elsewhere. Also, It seems the "action" in Santa Monica is more north of highway 10, whereas this hotel is south of that. The neighborhood seems more "sprawlish" south of HWY 10. 4. The hotel staff is fairly helpfull and quickly responded to our needs (extra blankets, etc.). Nice people. 5. If I were to do it again, I wouldn't stay here. I would chose a hotel in West Hollywood (a more central locatiota Monica when I needed to. 6. Last item...It's typically foggy/cloudy near the beach. So, if you want sun, I would suggest staying at a hotel more inland (West Hollywood, Bev Hills - don't let "Bev Hills" fool you, you can find cheap rates for these hotels and it's a cleaner neighborhood). Good luck!
