We just returned with another family, from the Embassy Suites, near Old Town Sacramento. Both families are Hilton Gold VIP members, and usually get great treatment and accommodations at all Hilton and Hilton brand hotels...

Here is the scoop on this hotel, the good and the bad:

First the bad, when we arrived, we were told the indoor pool and spa as well as the fitness room were closed indefinitely, for reasons no one could explain. The front desk person acted as if she would rather be somewhere else and it took over 30 minutes (I am not kidding) to check us in. We were given 2 adjoining rooms that were supposed to be non-smoking, that smelled like smoke. When we told them the adjoining doors were locked, the maintenance person came up (he was on his phone the entire time), unlocked them and did not move any of the furniture (couch and table blocked both doors). Also, one of the TV's did not work. At this point, we called the front desk and asked for the manager. At this hotel, the rooms all look down into a central, indoor lobby and plaza area. There was an event in the plaza area, which would have not been so bad, except someone had a microphone and talked until 10 p.m. There was also a sorority party in one of the ballrooms, so we had to listen to screaming girls and doors slamming until well after midnight (all the sound echoes around the lobby). In the morning, our freeway-view rooms were noisy. Finally, they charge you $18 to park your car at this hotel. There is no self-park.

Now, the good, when we called about the smoky rooms, the manager came up immediately and moved us to two new rooms, unlocked the adjoining doors, made sure the rooms were satisfactory. They reduced our room rate to $129 per night (from $149). The managers evening reception and LARGE breakfast were great with our kids. The hotel's location was right across the street from Old Town and about 6 blocks from the capitol. The rooms are decent, and look fairly new. Bed was comfortable.

We had a great time in Sac, touring the capitol and visiting Old Town and the Train and Discovery Museums, but next time we are in the Sacramento area, we will stay somewhere else. Also, an earlier reviewer mentioned Joe's Crab Shack, on Friday night, expect to wait an hour to be seated (put your name in and then walk around Old Town).
