Nice with at Touch of luxury A review of Gran Hotel El Tope
Stayed at the El Tope with my sister June 02, booked with Thomsons Gold.Impressed by public areas, and room was lovely, though had to be moved at our expense as Thomsons had not informed the hotel I have walking difficulties and they put us in rooms with stairs only access - and overlooking the road.Pool was too small and we never ever got a sunbed for the day. We had to wait till around 4pm and then go down for a swim. Fortunately our second room had a very large balcony overlooking the pool and two sun loungers, but I do love to swim so that was a disappointment.Food was average, perfectly nice but would expect better for this type of hotel. Not too much variation, after the first couple of days and we did eat out once or twice. Waiters and service superb, very friendly. Have to say having champagne at breakfast was a very nice touch, though we had to limit ourselves!!!!Other thing is the El Tope is high up, another thing not explained by Thomsons, and the only way down to the town really was via lots of steps, ( or a very very steep hill) no handrails, so a huge problem for me. Managed it once and from then on we got a taxi to town, but missing all the little shops on the way, far cheaper than the sea front..I should mention I was 39 and my sister 30 at the time of this holiday,so we were also about the youngest there, but this wasn't a problem at all. We love our nieces and nephews, but a week in a child free environment, I have to say was very relaxing. This was our first girls holiday together alone, and to be honest the hotel was great for us, reading, sunbathing, exploring, shopping.Entertainment was absolutely first class. No need to go out if you didn't want to.I have been to Tenerife once before, to Los Christianos, but really wanted to visit Puerto de la Cruz. Have to say this resort is just beautiful. Much more traditional, laid back, entertainment there if you want it but not in your face all day and all night. Much much nicer than the south, which my sister agreed when we had a day lovely holiday at this hotel, and I would return, despite the steps. Puerto de la Cruz would always be my first choice for Tenerife.
