More like a two/three star hotel A review of Ametyst Hotel Prague
Just returned from a four night stay at the Ametyst Hotel in Prague. Overall we were rather disappointed with the hotel, perhaps our expectations and experiences of what this four star hotel should be were too high for the Czech hotel star rating system - this felt more like a three or even a two star hotel.
On the positive side, the rooms were clean and were equipped with a safe and mini bar, the hotel offers a much welcomed (free - except of course for tip) clothes ironing service and the breakfast buffet was good (although with the restaurant size was far too small for the number of hotel residents, on each of the four mornings we ate there, it was rather like feeding time at the zoo).
On the downside, the hotel is a very long walk from the centre of Prague and 10-15 minutes from the metro/tram pick up point (not to mention this walk is mostly up hill on the cobbled pavements and roads), unfortunately the hotel (as well as many taxi drivers in this city) too overcharges for a taxi pick up service from the airport (800kc), we found the front office staff to be most unwelcoming and unfriendly, this lacking in communication also unfortunately extended to the breakfast staff (no staff member was allocated to seat and greet or even offered any kind of explanation/introduction on what their breakfast process was), the rooms were not air conditioned which with the front facing rooms we had, this meant that they were too warm and stuffy when the window was shut, or with the window open, a night of guaranteed disturbed sleep (from the noisy street below), in conclusion the hotel is rather overpriced for what it offers.
