Mixed Review A review of Holiday Inn Express Anchorage

My husband and I stayed here on May 26 and June 1 and had two totally different experiences as far as the quality of room. During our first stay we had a king room on the third floor with a wonderful view of the mountains. The room was spacious, very clean and the bathroom was larger than you find in most hotels.

During our second stay, we were assigned a king room on the first floor with a view of concrete and car tires as the first floor sits below street level. As soon as we opened the door it was apparent that a previous guest had smoked in the room. I washed my hands and discovered that the sink was broken and would not drain. The lever to control the drain stopper was missing and the stopper was stuck in the down position. The room appeared to be a "spare" room they only assign as a last resort.

I went back to the front desk and requested another room. The clerk was completely overwhelmed as she was the only person on duty and was responsible for checking in guests, answering the phone, making reservations and dispatching the shuttle vans. I give her a lot of credit - she kept her cool and remained pleasant at all times. The hotel was out of king rooms so I asked for anything on the third floor. I was given a room on the second floor (which is the main floor) next to the elevator with two queen beds (although they were the size of double beds - not queen), with a view of the shuttle vans parked outside. Based on the location (right off the lobby and next to the elevator), the room was actually a lot quieter than I expected.

The complimentary continental breakfast is a nice touch as all meals are expensive in Alaska. The location is excellent - very close to the airport and accesible to Seward Highway.

I would stay here again - but request a third floor room at the back of the hotel so you can enjoy a mountain view instead of the parking lot.
