Metza Metza A review of Meadowmere Resort
My wife, daughter and son (4 and 1) and I stayed here for four nights in July 2004.
After reading about the wonderful reviews of the Meadowmere on Tripadvisor, I was looking forward to staying Meadowmere with great anticipation.
Unfortunately, our experience did not live up to our expectations.
We stayed at the West Meadow Building overlooking the pool. Upon arriving and unloading the car, we found two hotel employees hanging outside on the steps taking a break and there was a noticeable air of funky cigarette smoke (not pot).
Along those same lines, I witnesses another employee sitting down at the same location smoking a cigarette. When she saw me and my daughter coming, she did have the decency to stand up and wave away the cigarette smoke. After that encounter, I did notice several cigarette butts on the grounds.
With respect to the room, it was nice and clean. The beds were comfortable and did have wheels.
The bedding was okay and what would you would generally expect nothing more. The bathroom was clean.
The in-room dorm sized refrigerator did not seem to work correctly. First it was not cold enough. Then it started freezing everything. Fortunately, we brought along a cooler and took advantage of the ice machine near the indoor pool which worked flawlessly.
Another issue was a headboard that came off the wall on the day before we left.
The inside and outside pools were clean and well maintained. With respect to the indoor pool, there was no apparent effort to enforce the no diving rule. That rule probably exists merely to limit the hotel's liability in case of injury.
The complimentary continental breakfeast (served in the pub) was okay. Items served consisted of cereal, banana quarters, donuts, muffins, bagels, watermelon, english muffins, etc, along with coffee and orange juice. One issue I had was the lack of high chairs despit the fact the hotel is supposed to be family friendly.
The game room was a nice diversion for my daughter. It contained air hockey (which she loves), a pool table and a variety of video games.
I used the health club one morning and I found the equipment to be quite sufficient. It was not crowded at all and had sufficient number of weight machines, free weights and cardio machines. I noticed no water being provided and assume you have to bring your own water.
I was not able to check out the theatre which shows three movies daily that change every day. The movies that are being shown tend to have been released in theartes about 3-6 mos earlier or longer in some cases. However, it is complimentary.
The hotel is a little farther away from the beach than I would have liked. Unless you are traveling light and/or with no little kids, you either have to drive or take the trolley. We did the former.
During our second full day it started to rain and the forecast for the remainder of the stay looked bleak. So I inquired with the front desk if we could check out early. The person I spoke to indicated we could check out anytime we like. I inferred that as meaning we would not be responsible for any days booked that we were foregoing. We decided to stay one more day (which was raining) and traveled to Freeport. I called that day told the front desk that we were leaving one day early and I was quoted a balance on my bill of four nights less my advance deposit.
However, when I went to check-out the hotel clerk told me we were still responsible for the fifth night because we did not give 7 days notice to cancel. However, his senior colleague allowed the forgiveness of the fifth night (this time) after I told them about the the two prior inquiries about leaving early and nobody told us we were still liable for the unused nights. To their credit, the hotel did allow AAA adjustment off the bill.
To summarize I would rate my experience as okay but it was somewhat disappointing due to the prior outstanding ratings granted the Meadowmere.
Accordingly, when I return to Ogunquit, I will be more than likely staying at another property.
