Mediocre city hotel claiming four stars A review of Menzies Strathallan, Birmingham
I booked this room via active hotels for £40, room only. For only one night- and we checked in 20:00, it was acceptable. Bathroom was newly fitted, clean and roomy. Bed and beddings were very nice. But other than that, the hotel has a dated and dirty look, broken cupboards, dirty carpets and walls, peeling wallpaper etc. Especially enterence from parking lot makes you think if you made a mistake, it's like multistorey cark park stairs where somebody peed at every corner. Fortunately nobody peed on these.
In the morning we had the most expensive and the worst, irrespective of price, breakfast. "Continental" breakfast (£11.00) is some fruit pieces and fruit juice, cereals, bread and jam and few slices of salami. Pastries were exceptionally bad. My husband had a full breakfast (£13.00) with added English breakfast varieties but none looked appetising and he could not finish his. He says eggs were particularly bad. So if you don't have an exam starting in an hour like i had, I would suggest to breakfast somewhereelse. There is nothing nearby though.
Apperently they started to charge £3.50 for 24h parking, but they do not except any responsibility if your car gets stolen/ damaged. We gave the plate number but the receptionist gave the slip back to us, another friend was not asked the plate no, yet another one was not even asked if she parked there or not. In essence, you park at your own risk but pay £3.50 the same.
For the price I paid for the room, it was alright, but I can't see how they can charge £70- £150 per night for this hotel especially including breakfast!
as a summary, if you find a good deal, go for it, it's comfortable enough for an overnight stay, don't have breakfast there, book your room room only. But don't expect very much from those 4 stars.
