Luxury, but not beachfront A review of Avila La Fonda Hotel
My husband and I booked a four-night stay at the Avila La Fonda in mid-October. A brand-new hotel, the rooms are full of high-tech luxuries, such as a gas fireplace, flat-screen TV, DVD player, IPod dock, although the rooms are rather small. The bathrooms include showers for two, although we found the multi-head options awkward. We stayed in one of the rooms with a spa-tub right next to the king-sized bed.
If only the Avila La Fonda were located right on the beach, it would be perfect. Our room for the first three nights had only a tiny balcony not even large enough for a chair. We faced a street and were awakened before 7AM by the extensive construction sounds that permeate Avila Beach. For our last night we moved across the hall to a room with a balcony that included a "peek-a-boo" view of the ocean, but no clear ocean sounds. Traffic noise isn't too bad, since Avila is several miles from the 101.
The hotel offers wine and cheese, along with other munchies, in the early evening, but there didn't seem to be many takers. The happy hour takes place on the patio, which itself is beautiful, but has a view of an empty lot and the beach parking lot.
A continental breakfast with newspapers would be especially nice for this property because there are not many breakfast options in Avila. The staff is extremely gracious and gave us plenty of recommendations for restaurants and places to sightsee.
