Lots of things to do for everybody. Pleasant and kids friendly but A review of The Hotel Hershey
I just have spent 2 nights at the hotel (9/6-9/8) with my husband and a 21-month old and we got very mixed feelings about the place. The grounds are indeed very nice: well maintained, beautiful fountains with colorful fish, lots of flowers, tall pine trees, nice long walking trails, outdoor games (tennis, shuffleboard, basketball, etc), playground, etc. You can even go on a 30 minute carriage ride around the grounds. However, there were also lots of yellow jackets by the fountains (to the point that people were very quickly retreating back inside) and gnats by the playground and in the wooded areas (bring a bug spray! there were also lots of gnats at the Hershey gardens and on the golf courses). The service was also mixed. Service at the main dining room was exceptional, house keeping was pretty good too but some of the staff at the Fountain Caf was just plain rude. Also, concierge and the front desk were not very helpful: unless you ask them a very direct question they dont usually volunteer information. For example, on Sunday afternoon I was asking about the dress code in the main dining room and they have confirmed that the jacket is required but they have never mentioned that the jacket can be provided at the dining room upon request nor did they mention that the dining room was closed that night for a private party (I found that out when I was making a reservation an 1 hour before our dinner time). Also, they seem to turn deaf to any complains you might have. As far as the dining experience goes the main dining room is superb (try their Belgium waffles at the breakfast buffet). Buffet is free for little kids (under 3, I think). The Fountain Caf had a rather small main menu (but a pretty good kids menu) but it did not change in two days. Try their Crab Cakes and BBQ chicken pizza. My little one loved the inside fountain in front of the main dining room very lovely place. The room was OK large enough for my kid to run around. The bathroom was nice a spacious. The closet is too small. The air-conditioning units very noisy. The Hershey Garden is just a short 5 minute walk from the main entrance and has a wonderful newly opened Childrens Garden. Other things to keep in mind: the outdoor pool and the Club House Caf close after the Labor Day weekend. The indoor pool does have a kiddie pool but it's very small (the floor at the indoor pool is extremely slippery - you might want to bring water socks for the kids). The Hershey Park is open only on weekends after the Labor Day (this was also never mentioned to us by the concierge when my husband asked about the rides, so since we waited till Monday to go to the Park, we never made it there because it was closed!). Bottom line: do your homework about the attractions when you are planning the trip. And as far as the price goes, we paid the full hotel rate and it really was not worth it but if you get a bargain go for it. Overall we had a nice stay but would not go back well maybe if we find a really good deal on the rate.
